The Intel 80386 Business Case

Many people only know Intel as the industry dominating corporation they became after the rise of the 'wintel' duopoly, but there's a lot more to the story.

A lot of the focus in the personal computer market these days is on Apple vs. Microsoft, but not very much discussion about the company that produces the processors that most of the power most of the computers the software, and hardware in the case of Apple, run on. This Computer History Museum presentation discusses the history of Intel and their transformation from just one of the many semiconductor manufacturers in their industry to one of the most powerful and profitable technology companies.

While I remembered how much of an improvement the 80386 was over Intel's previous processors, I had forgotten what a game-changing move it was from a business standpoint.
